Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor. Lipases are gut enzymes that break down fat from food, enabling the gut to transport fat into the body to be burnt for energy or stored in our fat cells for later use.
Orlistat blocks lipases, preventing some of the dietary fat from our meals from being digested. This leads to fewer calories being absorbed, which can support weight loss.
Orlistat is a prescription medication produced by two pharmaceutical companies in the UK:
Orlistat is used to treat approved for weight loss in the following ways:
A prescription medication like Orlistat can also be used for conditions likelactic acidosis, where your body no longer produces blood pressure enough to move your body away from acidity extremes. This is where Novartis or Aventis partners with your healthcare providers to identify whether you have lactic acidosis, a serious condition that affects about 10% of the country's body cells.
Patel VaiAventis Pharmaceuticals, the UK's largest manufacturer of prescription medications, is the second pharmaceutical company to voluntarily recall Orlistat. In 2011, it voluntarily added a warning to its consumer health record that people with lactic acidosis may have a higher risk of developing the condition, particularly if they are over 60. The company has also stopped making its own version of the drug, which is still available.
Aventis has also stopped making its own version of the drug. This is because the recalled version of Orlistat contains higher concentrations of the active ingredient lactic acid, which can cause side effects and make it less effective. The company said it was working to find a safer substance.
Novartis is not the first company to voluntarily recall prescription medication for weight loss. In 2011, Roche's Alli weight loss agent weight loss pill were recalled after it was discovered it had an active ingredient that could lead to weight gain.
In 2017, Roche's Xenical weight loss pill Xenical ( Losec ) was recalled after it was discovered it contained an active ingredient that could lead to weight loss.
AstraZeneca said it was the third pharmaceutical company voluntarily recall associated with the recall of Orlistat. In 2011, Abbott's Allopurin XL ( Janssen-Cilag ) was voluntarily recalled after it was discovered it contained high concentrations of lactic acid that could lead to side effects like muscle loss, kidney problems and heart disease.
In 2017, Roche's Xenical weight loss pill Xenical ( Losec ) was voluntarily recalled because it contains a higher concentration of lactic acid than Allopurin XL.
Aventis Pharmaceuticals said it was the last remaining pharmaceutical company voluntarily recall associated with the recall of Orlistat. In 2011, Roche's Allopurin XL ( Janssen-Cilag ) was voluntarily recalled after it was discovered it contained higher concentrations of lactic acid that could lead to muscle loss.
A 2021 study in The BMJ found that prescription Orlistat was effective at helping people with lactic acidosis lose weight. The BMJ study involved 60 people with lactic acidosis who were either taking Orlistat or who had not previously used Orlistat.
GlaxoSmithKline said: "GlaxoSmithKline is voluntarily reducing the number of recalls associated with Orlistat. The company said it was the last remaining pharmaceutical company voluntarily recall associated with the recall of Orlistat."
AstraZeneca said it was the first company voluntarily recall associated with the recall of Orlistat.
Carrying too much weight puts stress on your body which can lead to a variety of health issues.
By reducing the amount of fat cells in your body, you reduce the likelihood of getting very serious conditions such as heart disease, certain cancers, stroke, liver disease, type II diabetes, osteoarthritis and high blood pressure. Being overweight also affects the respiratory system, with side effects such as sleep apnoea and asthma.
If you are overweight or clinically obese then you may suffer from low self-esteem or lack self-confidence and therefore losing weight can help you to regain confidence, increase your self-esteem and lower the risk of depression. It also helps improve the ratio of good to bad cholesterol; reduce blood pressure and inhibit the progression to type II diabetes.
Weight loss can be a difficult and daunting prospect, however clinical studies have shown that those who use Xenical / Orlistat alongside dieting can achieve 50% more weight loss than dieting alone.

Under the Guidance of a Healthcare professional, Xenical / Orlistat mayophen abuse the healthcare system:
Dietary fats are large molecules that need to be broken down before they can be absorbed into the body. They are broken down by enzymes called lipases. That is, lipases play an important role in the digestion of dietary fat. When taken with a meal, Xenical interferes with the activity of these enzymes. This allows about 30% of the fat eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. Therefore, your body cannot store these excess calories as fatty tissue or use them as a source of energy. This helps you to reduce your weight by burning up fat that you are already carrying, maintain your lower weight and minimise any weight regain. Losing even small amounts of weight and keeping it off produces additional health benefits for you, especially when you are at risk for other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Xenical can also help to improve risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. If these are not treated, they could lead to other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Xenical should be taken in conjunction with a well-balanced calorie-controlled diet and other appropriate measures such as exercise.Active Ingredients:Xenical does not contain sucrose, gluten, tartrazine or any other azo dyes.
